<p>This descriptive research wanted to know prevalence of allergic conjunctivitis in two medical institutions in Bogotá and three in Cundinamarca from March 2006 to February 2007. 813 patients constitute the sample of this study. They attended to the optometry and ophthalmology consultations in the Rafael Uribe Uribe Hospital and Medical Center San Camilo in Bogotá, and to El Salvador Hospital in Unabté, San Rafael Hospital in Girardot and Mario Gaitán Yanguas in Soacha, these three in Cundinamarca. The data collection method was through the optometric examination during the months of the study in each one of the above mentioned hospitals, after the exam standardization. As a result, it was observed that allergic conjunctivitis prevalence was 21.8% in the group of age between 0 – 17, 18% in the group of age between 18 -35 and 9.8% in the group of age between 36 – 53 and women presented the highest prevalence with 15.5%.</p> - Astigmatism, important finding in populations from Bogotá and Cundinamarca

This descriptive investigation looked for the prevalence of astigmatism in 2 health institutions of Bogota and 3 of Cundinamarca from March 2006 to February 2007. It includes 813 patients who visited the optometry and ophthalmology services of the Rafael Uribe Uribe Hospital, San Camilo Health Center of Bogota, El Salvador Hospital in Ubaté, San Rafael in Girardot and Mario Gaitán Yanguas in Soacha, Cundinamarca, by means of optometric clinical examination, collecting the information in clinical history; previous standardization of the test. As result of this research, the observed prevalence of the astigmatism was 57% in the group from 0 to 17 years followed by the group from 18 to 35 years in 56%. The prevalence genus showed a small difference between men and women by 50.1% and 50.7% respectively. According to the socioeconomic layer was more prevalent the layer 1 with 52.1% and the second one was the layer 3, being 51% its prevalence. In conclusion, astigmatism appears mainly in young people in school age and of low socioeconomic layers: It is why policy must focus to improve their quality of life. - Determining an Epidemiological Baseline in the Practice Scenario of the Optometry Program at the University of La Salle, 2010

<em><strong>Objective:</strong></em> To develop an epidemiological baseline and find out the socioeconomic conditions andmorbidity of patients seen in the optometric practice in areas of Tolima where the final semesterinternship of students from the program of Optometry, Faculty of Science Health at the Universityof La Salle in 2010 was carried out. The study is observational and descriptive. Those reported inthe rips of each institution in 2010 who attended the optometric practice in the teaching-serviceagreement in the extension Optometry program of the University of La Salle were taken as thetarget population. <em><strong>Materials and methods:</strong></em> The data collection technique used was observation andthe data collection instrument was the rips form. Also, a survey of users and the community wastaken to determine the socioeconomic conditions within the population. For the determination ofvisual morbidity, information reported by each institution in the 2010 rips was sampled. <em><strong>Results:</strong></em>We found that visual defects affected more than eye problems. Astigmatism and farsightedness arethe defects with the highest incidence in the population studied. The population does not havea healthy lifestyle, which presents risk factors that increase the likelihood of contracting diseasesthat not only affect eye health, but also systemic health. - Health quality, an obligation for everybody

Health attention and quality in health service have become part of an improvement process in the Social Security System in Colombia. That is why regulations in force are each time more specific regarding this topic. The process to find and keep health quality in our context is highly important. Every agent providing health, professionals and population must participate, therefore, as consequence, a satisfactory result in the real solution of health problems in the country might appear. Current regulations intend to give importance to a basic aspect: health service improvement. In this process every agent providing health and professionals have a commitment with every part in the process and with users as a final end of attention. Law 100 of 1993 brought a series of reflections which have involved us in users’ life quality improvement. The access to health service is the most important aspect to tend towards and therefore the process to obtain quality is indispensable. - Myopia, visual alteration in population of Bogotá and Cundinamarca

The objective of this descriptive investigation was to know the prevalence of myopia in two medical institutions in Bogota and in other three in Cundinamarca from March 2006 to February 2007. Materials and <em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> 813 patients were examined, belonging to low social and economical status and affiliated to a social security, who attended the optometry consultation in the following Cundinamarca hospitals: Rafael Uribe Uribe, Medical Center San Camilo in Bogota, El Salvador Hospital in Ubaté, San Rafael Hospital in Girardot and Mario Gaitán Yanguas Hospital in Soacha. Information was collected in data base SPSS 15.0 through an optometric evaluation and previous standardization of the test, finding those refractions for both eyes with negative spheres and cylinders smaller or equal to their third part. <em><strong>Results:</strong></em> the prevalence of myopia was 17.5% (20/114) in the group of age between 54 and 71, followed by the group of age between 18 and 35 with 16% (24/150). The prevalence in women was 10.3% (53/515) and in men was 9.1% (27/298). Conclusions: The myopia is presented mainly in mature people in economically productive age, what shows the importance of the diagnosis and the opportune treatment of this disease because its represents a medium prevalence and significant visual alterations in the population. - The pterigio, a relevant pathology in San Diego de Ubate people

This descriptive research intends to know the reason of the presence of pterigio in different population, regarding age, gender, occupation and permanence zone of Valle de San Diego de Ubate population from July 2005 to January 2006. The sample was 897 patients who attended optometry and ophthalmology consultation in the El Salvador de Ubate Hospital. The research methodology was through clinical records collection, applying a printed survey to find information about the specific problem. As a result, pterigio had a presence of 40.31% in the group of 20-40 year old population; 61.47% in 41-65 year old group and 29.22% in over 65 year old people. By gender, the prevalence was 83.64% in women and 47.36 in men. Regarding occupation, the presence of pterigio was 42.33% in people related to housework, 35.27% in agriculture and 24.18% in mining. Finally, the towns presented the following percentage: 30.24% in Ubaté, 20.16% in Fuquene, 16.13% in Susa, 11.8% in Cucunuba, Guachetá, and Carmen de Carupa, 9.7% in Tausa, 8.6% in Simijaca, and 7.5% in Suatatausa and Lenguazaque.
