To convert the measurements obtained from the corneal surface into dioptric value, the B&L keratometer uses the general lens formula (n’-n/R) and assumes an n’ of 1,3375 (compared to the actual corneal refractive index of n’=1,376). This is a fictional value, which includes an allowance for the small, yet significant, negative power of the posterior corneal surface.

This article is an attempt to relate my own setting up as an educator, psychologist and supervisor. I include this outline incited by the constant challenges that mobilize me in exercising these assignments within the context of the Net of Private Schools permanently striving to revitalize their educational mission. It’s a reflective revisitation of the course that has been undertaken, impelled by the experience gone through in the Workshop about the Autobiography Research, which had as guideline the rebuilding of memories, shared and debated within the collectivity, I inspire myself and go in search of some particular reasoning within the presuppositions of some authors, such as Abraão, Huberman, Nóvoa.

This article is an interconnection between Critical Environmental Education and Law, seeking to discuss participatory democracy in the Judiciary, having as justification the need to understand Critical Environmental Education and thinking from the Democratic State, adding possibilities for direct participation of citizens in decisions. Thus, it raises the question: Can Critical Environmental Education and Law develop environmental knowledge for the benefit of participatory democracy in the Judiciary? In this context, the objective is to analyze how Critical Environmental Education and Law can contribute to the formation of environmental knowledge and achieve participatory democracy in the Judiciary. This research consists of a qualitative approach, with theoretical-methodological analysis, through bibliographic and documental means and, to understand and interpret the information, the technique of content analysis and sampling was used. As the main results obtained, the need to break with traditional dogmatics is highlighted, at the same time that the intense and necessary approximation of Law with Critical Environmental Education is perceived. Emphasis is also placed on social participation in spaces for debates about diffuse rights that can be established through democracy. For this, a reconstruction carried out through the critical nature of Environmental Education is essential. It was shown here that it is necessary to understand the spaces for dialogue and the scope of participatory democracy. The fact is that it is necessary to break with traditional demands in the Judiciary and transpose, through Critical Environmental Education, into a new relationship with the judges, in favor of the community in a space of participatory democracy.

Abortion is illegal in most Latin American countries, although there are some attenuating and exonerating causes in its practice. However, studies performed in countries with liberalizing processes for more than two decades, such as the United States, show the persistence of different attitudes towards abortion, which go from points of view that are pro-life to points of view that are pro-choice. Based on Latinobarómetro 2007, this paper analyzes the attitudinal patterns of individuals towards abortion, with emphasis on its degree of justification according to socio-economic features, faith and religion, as well as the countries’ own characteristics. Ordinary least squares estimates for 18 Latin American countries show that men under 40, agnostic, highly educated and with socioeconomic access are those that justify abortion the most; likewise, Uruguay —particularly its female population— is the country where it is most justified.

Absenteeism, frequent phenomenon in business, is derived from various causes and has a negative impact on the economy and the development of the workers’ normal activities; it results in an increase in labor costs and workload. <em><strong>Objective:</strong></em> To determine the motivations of health professionals at the Hospital Vista Hermosa level I, health institution of the State, to be absent from their scheduled shifts. Materials and <em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> This study, aiming to reach technical importance, requires the qualitative and quantitative analyses of the variables involved in employee satisfaction at the immediate medical attention center (CAMI) Vista Hermosa. <em><strong>Results:</strong></em> The level of permanence of the working relationship with the company is high: 42% of time worked between two and ten years, followed by 33% of time worked for over ten years. A high degree of satisfaction was found (42%), followed by a 25% of very satisfied employees. This finding relates to the motivations and guarantees provided by the hospital to its employees. Conclusions: This study showed that the major causes of absenteeism at the CAMI Vista Hermosa were sick leave, delay or absence due to additional work and domestic calamity; which is directly associated with the fact that the company belongs to the health sector, where there is a high workload and a culture of having simultaneously one or more jobs.

Given the relevance of the Saber 11º test scores for educational institutions, this paper maskes a critical review of the actions aimed at improving quality. A historical development of the concept of evaluation is presented, from its beginnings to present ideas in order to assess its function. Using a qualitative methodology of ethnographic nature, the hidden curricula of three schools from the Department of Córdoba were revealed, which represent the different approaches to teaching quality. Such actions include exclusion, dishonesty, inequality and symbolic violence strategies. It is concluded that the academic effects of these actions carry more harm than good.

<p>In this paper we estimate the impact caused by the size of the classroom, understood as the number of students per classroom, and the academic performance of Latin American ninth grade students, based on the PISA 2012 results. A linear model estimated by ordinary least squares is used to calculate the net effect of group size, introducing institutional, family and student variables used as control. It is estimated that the 1% increase in the number of classroom students decreases the test score by 0.1% on average; however, this factor has relatively less impact than other, more significant factors, such as the household’s socioeconomic level or the parents’ education.</p>

The presence of neoplasms at the level of the oral cavity in dogs is evidenced by 9% in clinical studies, allowing a difference of 29% for benign cases and 32% for malignant cases. A 10-year-old female of the canine species, of the fox terrier breed, sterilized, living under the supervision of guardians. It was clinically evaluated by the presence of a proliferative mass with areas of hyperpigmentation at the level of the lower lip rostral to incisor and canine teeth at the level of the mandibular bone, with a compromise of the oral vestibule and sublingual caruncles. Histopathology indicated that the sample contains an abundant amount of dense, non-patterned fibroblastic tissue, with collagenous bundles in different directions, occasionally including well-differentiated bone tissue, which contains a medullary cavity. The morphopathological diagnosis consisted of an ossifying fibroma / acanthomatous ameloblastoma with ulcerative stomatitis. The case was approached from a surgical setting by means of a bilateral partial rostral mandibulectomy and the incorporation of an esophageal catheter, during the postoperative period. Through this report we seek to publicize presentations of this type of neoplasm and allow, through specific diagnoses, to make decisions that can support the quality of life of our patients.

<p>A small dairy goat farm in central Chile stocked their troughs with ornamental plants and grasses, which were obtained after pruning the gardens of neighboring sectors. Twelve hours after the goats ingested this food, the farm registered a death toll of eight goats, all of which were adult females in their productive stage, before entering the milking parlor. The mortality episode lasted 84 hours and produced mortality and morbidity values of 48 and 54 percent, respectively (n = 52). During a visit to the farm, clinic inspections, autopsies, and sample tissues were obtained for microscopic analysis (the tissues specimens were fixed in 10% buffered formaldehyde solution). The clinic inspection and microscopic analysis both confirmed that the animals had cardiovascular disease. The lesions were compatible with those produced by cardiac glycosides. During the site visit, Nerium oleander was found in the troughs, which suggested that the animals were poisoned by eating this plant. There was a high presence of this plant in the poisoned area, and it was not associated with the mortality episode before the on-site visit, which indicates that the authors should conduct training and inform producers about the handling and feeding of their animals</p>

<em><strong>Objective:</strong></em> determine the accommodative state in refractive amblyopia patients between five and twelve years old. <em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> A sample of fifteen refractive amblyopic children was included, and a control group of fifteen children between five and twelve years of age. The control group patients were required to have a maximum VA of 0.32 LogMar without correction, both at distance and near vision, and an uncorrected refractive error. It took into account individuals with mild and moderate refractive amblyopia of both anisometropic and isometropic types, with a minimum VA of 0.4 and a maximum VA of 0.8 LogMar with appropriate optical correction. Subjects suffering from organic ocular alterations, cognitive problems, diagnosis of strabismus, strabismus surgery or trauma were excluded, as well as patients who had attended or at the time were attending vision therapy. The accommodative state was evaluated in each patient, measuring the Lag of accommodation, the flexibility and the amplitude of accommodation (AA) with three subjective (PU, MPD and ML) and one objective technique (MODAA, for its initials in Spanish). <em><strong>Results:</strong></em> AA measured with the four methods was statistically significantly lower in amblyopic patients (p < 0.05), being the difference more pronounced with the use of ML (4.72 D). However, with the objective MODAA technique, which has shown high reliability, the differences were not clinically significant (0.47). Conclusions: The accommodative state of refractive amblyopia patients between five and twelve years is lower when subjective methods are employed. The most common alteration was insufficiency of accommodation.

Accommodative spasm is a multifactorial entity in which there is a hyperfunction of the ciliary muscle that induces myopia. It can develop after refractive surgery, generating reduced expectations and bothersome visual symptoms for the patient. In this article we report a case of accommodation spasm in the non-operated eye following Lasik, with refraction without cycloplegia OD + 0.25 OI -3.00 Sph and with cycloplegia OD -0.25 OI +0.25 Sph. The visual and refractive response was adequate to the treatment of relaxation and accommodation flexibility with positive lens and flippers. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to review postsurgical vision therapy and the etiology underlying this unusual condition.

<em><strong>Objective:</strong></em> To determine difference in the accommodative state between refractive amblyopic and non-amblyopic patients from 5 to 12 years of age. <em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> The sample included 142 children (46 with refractive amblyopia and 96 non-amblyopic) between 5 and 12 years of age the accommodative state was evaluated in each one of them by determining the accommodative lag with Nott retinoscopy, accommodative flexibility with flippers, and the amplitude of accommodation with a subjective (MPD) and an objective technique (MODAA). <em><strong>Results:</strong></em> A statistically significant difference was found between amblyopic and non-amblyopic subjects in the lag of accommodation (0.22, p < 0.001), accommodative flexibility (1.5 cycles, <em>p</em> < 0.001), and the amplitude of accommodation 1.6 D (<em>p</em> < 0.001), using the MPD technique. With MODAA, there was no statistically significant difference between amblyopic and non-amblyopic children for the dominant eye (0.02 D, <em>p</em> = 0.893), while for the non-dominant eye the difference was 0.38 D. <em><strong>Conclusions:</strong></em> Using objective methods to evaluate these three functions of the accommodative state in patients with mild to moderate refractive amblyopia, the values obtained were within the normal range. However, when compared with non-amblyopic patients, a statistically significant difference was detected, which does not necessarily lead to the diagnosis of amblyopic patients with inadequate accommodation. The most altered accommodative function in the non-dominant eyes of patients with refractive amblyopia was accommodative flexibility. In patients with refractive amblyopia, alteration of the accommodative system is directly proportional to the degree of anisometropia.

At present time there has been an increase of patients making near vision activities with a great near vision demand in reading and computer activities. The clinical practice experience shows frequently that near working for long time in computer generates different symptoms that decrease visual comfort (Lovasik & Kergoat, 1988; Hayes, et ál., 2007). The most frequent associated symptoms related to computer work have been migraine, fatigue, astenopía, jump of lines, intermittent double vision, accommodation problems during the work and after work when patient tries to focus in far vision (Sterner, 2006; Iribarren, 2002; Sheedy & Parsons, 1990); according to the studies, they can be other related causes to a decrease in accommodative response tests: amplitude, accommodative response, flexibility, near point and relative accommodations (Bar et ál., 2000). It also been found that abnormal vergences states that can be associated to accommodative anomalies inasmuch as they maintain one narrow relation, but that can be surpassed with an integral treatment with certain procedures that in the research have shown to be efficient.
