Vitamin D estimate in women with osteopenia and osteoporosis in Cundinamarca, Colombia, by means of extraction in solid phase, liquid chromatography of high resolution and multivaried analysis At present great interest in the mineral metabolism exists and the role of the vitamin D3, by its importance in the understanding of the pathogenesis of the Osteoporosis and consequently by its preventive and therapeutic applications. The quantification of the Vitamin D implies various previous steps: separation, extraction and division that require the development of diverse methods seeking accuracy, precision, rapidity and versatility. The present study had as an objective to quantify the concentrations from serum of the main metabolites of the vitamin D3: 24-hidroxicolecalciferol, 24,25-dihidroxicolecalciferol and 1,25 dihidroxicolecalciferol aforesaid as vitamin D3 total in 50 patients with osteopenia or osteoporosis. The trial was carried out for a system of HPLC.The percent recovery post-extraction went of the 85%, the sensibility for the 1,25 dihidroxicolecalciferol went of 12.37 pg/ml and of the colecalciferol of 25 pg/ml. The average of Vitamin D3 total went of 2072 ng/ ml with an interval from 6.3 to 10600 ng/ml and was found differentiates significant in the Vitamin D concentration averages among women with DMO normal and the ones that had al less osteopenia in hip (p<0.04), nevertheless this difference was not significant in column. A significant difference of average concentrations of vitamin was found D among cases with and without antecedent of fracture (p=0.12). The relation of the concentrations of vitamin is discussed D with the bony mineral values of density and sociodemographic, biological, and clinical variables.

Bacterial etiology of external ocular infections in patients that live together or not with animals. In this investigation 286 patients that presented bacterial conjunctivitis as more frequent diagnostic impression were evaluated. In 286 microbiological cultivations carried out 177 bacterial isolations were obtained, being 73.45% positive Gram flora being the most frequent species S. epidermidis (48.46%), S. aureus (35.38%), S. pneumoniae (4.61%) and Corynebacterium sp. (2.31%). 26.55% corresponded to negative Gram bacilluses of which 74.47% is enterobacterias and 25.53% unfermented micro organisms. In this study was not found significant difference among the coexistence or not with animals and type of isolated micro organism associated to zoonosis.
  • Determinación perinatal de leptina en madres y neonatos condiagnóstico de retardo de crecimiento intrauterino (RCIU)
Perinatal determination of Leptin in mothers and neonates with diagnosis of retard of intra-uterine growth (RCIU) Recently it has been described that the leptin presents hormonal activity, acting on receivers and that it isinvolved in the regulation of the metabolic efficiency, spend energy and nutritious ingestion. Has been synthesizedin the sincitiotrofoblastos and it is secreted inside the maternal circulation. The leptin has also been related in thedeposit of fat. Since in the last trimester of the human pregnancy, in a characteristic way a relatively increaseddeposit of fat exists and that this leaves depletado evidently in the cases of RCIU, it is then probable that theleptin keeps relationship with the entity. The objective of this study was to investigate if differences exist among theleptinmensurations obtained in a group of healthy patients and with RCIU.The study was carried out in 12 patients with RCIU (cases) and 9 patients without RCIU (you control). For such a reason they took samples of maternal blood and blood cord and of amniotic liquid (THE). In the paired study (n=9) the leptin levels in children born with RCIU presented lower concentrations that the children control (p=0.05). The leptin concentrations in blood cord were correlated significantly with the weight of the neonate (p = 0.0002) and I weigh placentario (p = 0.048). It was not to significant correlation statistically of the leptin levels in maternal blood with the weight of the neonate and the placentario weight. The concentrations of amniotic liquid showed an inverse and statistically significant correlation with the weight neonatal (p = 0.035), but not with the placentario weight (p = 0.071). Inverse and statistically significant correlations were observed among: concentrations of maternal leptin and leptin in blood cord (p = 0.034); cord leptin with leptin in liquid amniotic (p = 0.011) and positive correlation between maternal leptin and leptin in the amniotic fluid (p = 0.01).

Once it was known the assessment about the problems related to the biological contamination that in the panorama of risks at the Health Sciences School highest incidence was found, the biological risk directly involving the performance of daily laboratory tasks. This finding was supported by the microbiological analysis and the prevention measures were implemented through an educational program, in order to reach a change towards a new culture of risks prevention, and to take care of oneself, to find a better quality of and to be able to develop the responsibility to take care of the environment. The educational program used was named Strategies for a New Biosecurity Culture and it was developed since the knowledge about the environment, the community and the agent. This educational program was implemented to teachers, to managing and to people who work in general services, then the evaluation was followed by an assessment of contamination levels in the laboratories, and this experience was evaluated by the indicator proposed, related to efficiency, efficacy and effectively. The results of the study was to know that a continuous and permanent educational program teaching since a flexible program development with special strategies that integrate about to be able to form an opinion, to be in the own context and to be innovating, and that if this knowledge is developed since the inducement, the present time, the new training and the evaluation so it was possible to obtain a significance decrease in the appearance of pathological microorganisms in labs.

Absence of interferences for heterophilic antibodies in the quantification de cardiac Troponin I, in patients with terminal chronic renal inadequacy in hemodialysis treatment. The present study seeks to value the behavior of the addition of the blocking reagent of heterophilic antibodies (HBR), in the cardiac Troponin I quantification in patient with terminal chronicle renal inadequacy subjected to hemodialysis treatment. To each one of 70 patients with IRCt in hemodialysis treatment in the San Rafael University Hospital of Bogotá, they were taken a sample of serum and one of plasm heparanized in the pre dialysis, in which the TnIc concentrations were quantified with and without HBR addition, by means of the enzimoinmunoassay Axsym. The statistical test of Wilcoxon was used. The TnIc values in plasms and serums with and without the HBR addition didn't show significant differences (0.113 and 0.666 respectively), so much in the total of the patients as in those with chronic cardiac illness. Not having found differences in the TnIc values with and without HBR it takes us to think of the absence of heterophilic antibodies or in that the blocking reagent HBR doesn't have action in this population of patients.

There areconcepts that we daily use, as the act of measure, and perhaps, for that reason, our educational  system gives to that act day to day the act responsibility of its practice and experimentation. However, it is clear that in the higher education one hardly can work in the formalization of the “measurement” concept without have before created the space for the analysis and experimentation of the measurement process of some magnitudes. In order to improve this behavior we are here proposing to carry out previous workshop to take into account the above mentioned problem need and make a direct application to the Chemistry possible.

The increasing amount of protein three-dimensional (3D) structures determined by x ray and NMR technologies as well as structures predicted by computational methods results in the need for automated methods to provide initial annotations. We have developed a new method for recognizing sites in three-dimensional protein structures. Our method is based on a previously reported algorithm for creating descriptions of protein microenvironments using physical and chemical properties at multiple levels of detail. The recognition method takes three inputs: 1. a set of sites that share some structural or functional role, 2.a set of control non-sites that lack this role, and 3. a single query site. A support vector machine classifier is built using feature vectors where each component represents a property in a given volume. Validation against an independent test shows that this recognition approach has high sensitivity and specificity. We also describe the results of scanning four calcium binding proteins (with the calcium removed) using a three dimensional grid of probe points at 1.25Å spacing. Our results show that property based descriptions along with support vector machines can be used for recognizing protein sites in un-annotated structures

Dengue virus is a flavivirus transmitted by the mosquito Aedes spp.and is the causative agent for an increasing public health problem in tropical areas over the world, with almost 3.000 million people at risk of infection. Dengue virus produces a broad spectrum of symptoms, varying from a mild flu-like illness called dengue fever, to a severe and some times fulminating haemorrhagic fever disease with shock. Genetic caracterization of distinct virus serotypes allow us to understand the epidemiological patterns of distribution as well as to demonstrate the presence of specific haemorrhagic strains causing very severe disease and death. In this report, we have determined the evolutionary origins of Dengue Virus Type 2 circulating in Colombia before and after the first reported haemorrhagic fever case at the ends of 1989, by means of sequence and further analysis of a 240 pb PCR amplified fragment from the E/NS1 joining region; with the sequences obtained from 5 strains isolated before 1989 and 10 from strains isolated years after, a phylogenetic tree was constructed which showed the presence of 2 different genotypes in our country; comparison with strains previously isolated from around the world determined that one of the genotypes found corresponds to the native American genotype circulating before the appearance of haemorrhagic fever, while the later isolated strains of the second genotype belonged to a Southeast Asian genotype, suggesting displacement of the native strains by more virulent genotypes.
