Introduction: Acrylic resins are indicated mainly for making temporary restorations fixed partial denture. This work aims to verify the influence of different polishing systems on the surface topography and microhardness of three acrylic resins: Dencôr, Dencrilay Speed, Duralay and a bisacrylic resin: Proviplast. Methodology: 140 specimens were made with a cylindrical silicone matrix of dimensions 5 x 2 mm (ISO 4872) that were distributed in fourteen test groups, according to the polishing (n: 10): ecs - Silicon Carbide brush, pbd - rubber tips impregnated with diamond, pd - paste diamond and GL: application of glaze. The roughness (Ra), Atomic Force Microscopy (mfa) and Microhardness (Ma) were obtained before and after polishing performed with the described systems. Results: The data obtained in the study were tabulated and analyzed by anova and Student’s “t” test 5% (α = 0.05). The roughness values varied between 0.05 and 6.2 μm and the bisacrylic resin with glaze presented the lowest average of roughness (0.05) and Dencrilay without polishing presented the highest value (6.2). The microhardness values varied between 23.3 and 11.6 where Duralay with abrasive rubber presented the highest average microhardness (23.3) and Duralay with paste the lowest value (11.6). Among the tested materials, resin bisacrylic with glaze obtained the lowest surface roughness value and Duralay resin with rubber obtained the highest microhardness value. - The use of bone grafts in dental practice

Introduction: The aim of this study is to describe, via literature review, the use of bone grafts and the types most commonly used to rebuild following alveolar bone loss. Methodology: This literature review was conducted using the following databases: Pubmed (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed), Scielo (http://www.scielo.org/php/index.php). The keywords for the textual search were: Bone Regeneration; Alveolar Bone Grafting; Dental Research; Dentistry. The inclusion criteria were: Literature that covers the subject under study, Literature of the last five years (from 2014 until 2019), English Language, systematic review, laboratory and clinical studies. The exclusion criteria were: literature review, letter to the editor, opinion article, literature duplicated in databases and literature that did not address the variables under study. Literature Review: 186 articles were found, but according to the inclusion criteria, only 30 were selected for this study. Bone is a specialized, vascularized and dynamic connective tissue that changes over the life of the organism. When injured, it has a unique capacity for regeneration and repair without the presence of scars, but in some situations due to the defect size, the bone tissue does not regenerate completely; thus, it is necessary to perform bone grafting procedures. Conclusion: The use of bone grafts in dentistry is shown to be a very effective and useful resource considering its great applicability in bone reconstructions in various areas of dentistry. However, greater knowledge about the viability and influence of biomaterials, whether associated to autogenous grafts or not, on bone repair is necessary. - The prevalence of sub-prosthetic stomatitis, angular cheilitis and fibrous hyperplasia associated with the use of dental prostheses in a university clinic in Medellín, 2017

Introduction: A maladaptive dental prosthesis can generate different lesions in the oral cavity, either due to its defective care, due to improper cleaning or due to mismatch with respect to anatomical tissues. Among the pathologies associated with the use of removable dentures are sub-prosthetic stomatitis, angular cheilitis and fibrous hyperplasia, among others; these pathologies are defined by the WHO as lesions of the oral mucosa. Materials and methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was performed, with a population of 162 individuals attending treatment at a university dental clinic in the city of Medellín, 2017. Of the total patients, 53 had removable dental prosthetics; according to selection criteria, the sample was 30, applying non-probabilistic sampling. A survey tool, using primary and secondary sources, was used for data collection; regarding clinical exploration and an investigation into the sociodemographic, medical, life habits and oral hygiene variables. Aunivariate and bivariate analysis was performed, with relative and absolute frequencies, tables and graphs, processed with the GraphPad Prism software. This research was classified as minimal risk, and received the approval of the Research Ethics Committee. Results and conclusions: 23.3% of the patients presented sub-prosthetic stomatitis; 13.3% with type II, 10% with type I and an absence of the pathology for the remaining 76.7%. 6.6% were found to suffer from angular cheilitis and no cases of fibrous hyperplasia was observed. - Mental health in dental students from a Public University in Medellín (Colombia) and its related factors

Objective: To analyze the prevalence of signs and symptoms related to stress, depression/anxiety and poor mental health and its association with sociodemographic factors in undergraduate students of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Antioquia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by means of a survey in 205 students (104 women). Variables: sociodemographic, general health, mental health (GHQ-12), depression/anxiety (Zung test), self-perceived stress. Analyses were carried out by sex, by means of a description of variables and crude and adjusted Odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals (aOR- 95%CI) was calculated, by logistic regression, in order to estimate association between variables. Results: Prevalence of indicators for men and women were the following (in order): poor mental health 43% and 52%, depression/anxiety 42% and 50% and self-perceived stress 34% and 41% (higher percentages in women). Significant statistically associations were found for men reporting depression/anxiety and stress and low social support (OR 20.94; 95%CI 2.13- 205.81 and OR 5.04; 95%CI 1.01- 25.02 respectively). Also, men and women proceeding from extended-assembled families were more likely to report depression/anxiety (OR: 8.82; 95%CI 1.29- 60.17 and OR: 14.94; 95%CI 1.56- 143.15 respectively). Women reporting low social support were more likely to report poor mental health, depression/anxiety and stress (OR: 20.72; 95%CI 2.19- 195.73; OR: 15.61; 95%CI 1.68- 144.62 y OR: 30.61; 95%CI 3,08- 304,35 respectively). Conclusions: Higher prevalence of signs and symptoms that suggest poor mental health, and differences according to sex and sociodemographic characteristics were found. - Trigeminal neuralgia and some considerations in practice dentistry clinic

Purpose: To generate interest in the dental professional regarding trigeminal neuralgia and the role it can assume in the timely care of the patient and its prevention during some dental procedures that could trigger it. Description: In dental practice, the demand of dentists with competence for opportune diagnosis and establishment of treatment is high. Some pathological conditions are occasionally not of direct interest to the dentist in their list of priorities, however, everything and that concerns the stomatognathic system and its operation should be considered relevant, particularly with regard to the Trigeminal Nerve (V cranial nerve), responsible for transmitting sensations to the mouth, teeth, face, nasal cavity and innervation of chewing muscles. Some conditions can cause Trigeminal Neuralgia, a painful and disabling condition, which can affect quality of life. Points of view: In clinical care, it is important to reflect on the anatomy of the trigeminal nerve and on trigeminal neuralgia, its definition, characteristics, classification, etiology, diagnostic considerations, the relationship between the dentist, the dental consultation and the patients with trigeminal neuralgia, as well as decision-making in the treatment and intervention of the dentist for this condition. Conclusions: Knowledge of the triggering factors, signs, symptoms and therapeutic alternatives allow the dentist to contribute to interacting in an active and interdisciplinary way with the care team; even more so when it is one of the main nerves that can be influenced during dental treatments. - Comics as a teaching resource to promote the care of the oral cavity in children

Introduction: Health education encompasses a series of learning tools that help modify behaviors related to people’s well-being. Comics are a means of communication accepted by different age groups, especially children and adolescents, which suggests that it can be tested as a teaching tool. This work evaluates the use of comic books as a means to promote the care of the oral cavity in pediatric patients, aged 6 to 10, who attend the sports school of the Fundación Granitos de Paz in Cartagena. Materials and methods: A quasi-experimental study was carried out in which two study groups were formed. Both groups received a test on self-care of the oral cavity prior to receiving classes on oral hygiene. The control group used educational techniques based on lectures and demonstrations, while the study group received health education through a comic strip. The knowledge acquired was then evaluated through a test. Results and conclusions: The results of the pretest were not satisfactory for either of the two study groups. Once the oral health education techniques were applied, the posttest results showed that 76% of children who were educated with comics received an excellent grade, while only 28% of children educated with conventional strategies received this assessment. The positive results show that the comic was well accepted and promoted the assimilation of knowledge about oral health care in children. - Understanding and practices surrounding oral care habits: beyond techniques

Introduction: The oral health care of children in early childhood is mediated by the knowledge and daily practices of responsible adults. This work attempts to analyze the knowledge and practices of adults responsible for oral care of children between 3 and 5 years, linked to the Las Golondrinas Foundation, Medellin, Colombia. Materials y methods: A qualitative case study, 27 interviews were conducted with significant adults related to the oral care of children linked to the institution. Results and conclusions: The adults reported their ease of access to information from various sources that, together with their motivation and experiences, has allowed them to build knowledge and adopt oral care practices in which they find new possibilities for care actions. As health educators, it is necessary to transcend disciplinary actions to contribute to the construction of protective processes, in which hygiene elements and techniques are integrated into contextual practices that contribute to different aspects of parenting, taking care of children in their different states of being. - Comparison of the movement of the upper canine and molar using class II elastics with and without Sliding Jig: a randomized clinical trial

Introduction: For the achievement of a cuspid Class I relationship, intermaxillary class II elastics have been used. They generate retraction in the upper arch and protraction on the lower arch. The Sliding Jig is a direct attachment, which exerts distal force on the molar, enhancing the horizontal vector of intermaxillary elastic. Objective: to determinate in a period of three months, the type and amount of movement of the upper canine and molar in the sagittal and vertical plane using class II elastics with and without Sliding Jig. Method: an uncontrolled randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare 15 hemiarches treated with Sliding Jig and 14 treated with class II elastics alone. The movements of each side were evaluated by a calibrated evaluator, using an initial Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) (T1) and a final CBCT (T2), taking three months after the mechanical was installed. Results: Variables were summarized using the mean and standard deviations with a 95 % confidence interval. For T1 and T2 comparison, a t-Student test was used. The upper molar distalization was greater and the vertical movement of the upper canine was lesser using the Sliding Jig than the only elastics side, with statistically significant differences (p<0,05); non-significant changes in sagittal and vertical movements of the canine or molar inclination were found. Conclusions: the Sliding Jig was more efficient than class II elastics alone, on the distalization of upper molars and the control of the canine extrusion. - Sugar intake and early childhood caries in Cali, Colombia

Background: The correlation between early childhood caries (ecc) and the consumption of sugar in foods and beverages in children has not yet been reported in Colombia. Objective: To investigate ecc prevalence and consumption of sugar in foods at day-care pre-schoolers. Design: A descriptive study was conducted with 124 children aged 3-4 years old attending three state funded childcare centres on weekdays and their feeding habits were recorded during 3 months and extrapolated to 1 year. The children ate an institutional determined menu at breakfast, lunch and two in between meals according to guidelines of the “Governmental Day Care Institution” that daily measure calories and classify food groups. After leaving the day-care premises and during the weekends, children feeding was a parenthood responsibility and by questionnaire, mother’s interview and programmed home visit, the dietary habits of children during the weekends was established. The International Caries Detection and Assessment System investigated ECC prevalence Results: Estimated sugar consumption of children per year was 52.20 kg which is high above of who recommendation. Even though there is an increase of eating unhealthy food and beverage intake during weekends, the amount of sugar intake during weekdays was also high and both associates with increased dmft index. Night-time feeding bottle was also associated with ecc. Toothbrush for dental plaque control of those children was also unfair. Conclusion: Excessive sugar intake and unfair toothbrush are important risk factor for ecc amongst Colombian young children. Colombia needs to develop and implement more strict nutritional policies to reduce children’s sugar consumption, and to improve efficient and regular dental plaque control at day-care institutions and at home, to reduce ecc prevalence. - Psychometric reproducibility properties analysis of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49) in patients with periodontal disease

Introduction: the oral health related quality of life measurement is considered a daily life negative effect indicator due to patients’ oral condition. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49) is an extended-use instrument, the readers should to expect the researchers to present the psychometric properties analysis, which describe the instrument behavior in the study population. The purpose is to evaluate the OHIP-49 reproducibility properties when is applied in patients with periodontal disease, who attend two dental healthcare institutions. Methods: we included 207 participants how it is suggested from the International Test Commission for similar purposes. We included 91 men and 116 women for convenience; reproducibility properties were evaluated: reliability, internal consistency, item discriminant validity, and content validity. Results: Cronbach’s alpha of 0.951 was obtained and high success percentages for internal consistency (87.5%-100%); the item discriminant validity not achieved acceptable success percentages (16,6% -68,5%). We decided to review the instrument content structure, with which a seven-factor model was obtained. According to the clinical situation, when we compared them with the less severe cases, patients with periodontitis stage III and IV presented worst quality of life represented in the dimensions of functional limitation, chewing, swallowing and aesthetics. Conclusions: a good instrument performance was obtained for this Colombian Caribbean Coast population; but it is valid to consider reducing dimensions to improve reproducibility scores. - Employability of graduates from dental programs in Medellin, Colombia, 2017-2018

Introduction: Self-medication is a public health problem as it can generate adverse reactions and bacterial resistance, causing greater risk to the patient. It is expensive, ineffective and can be avoidable. In dentistry, dental pain is one of the main reasons for self-medication, since the vast majority of people manage it through the intake of drugs without medical prescription. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify its prevalence in patients of public and private establishments in the canton of Azogues, Ecuador. Materials and methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was performed. The sample consisted of 201 patients of both sexes, aged 17 to 60 years. A validated questionnaire was applied. Results: The general prevalence was 75%, with the highest prevalence among males in the private sector 60%, and in females in the public sector 49%. NSAIDs were the most commonly used drugs by both sexes; the group that self-medicated most was from 17 to 25 years, with 33% self-medicating with NSAIDs 33%. The mostpopular way for taking the drugs, according to age and sex, was in tablet form (without a statistically significant relationship), and the dental pathology associated with self-medication was dental pain. Results and conclusions: Dental self-medication was practiced by two thirds of the sample, there was a higher prevalence in females and in the age group of 17 to 25 years, the most used drug was NSAIDs and the most common form was tablets. Most respondents are aware of the damage that self-medication can cause to health.
