This reflection paper stems from the research project “The languages of power”, developed at the Universidad de Manizales in 2010. It is a discussion about language, its logic, its organization and the acting of people while in the communication process, which can generate conflict. Therefore, to question the role of language and its responsibility in the birth of conflicts is the main purpose of this essay, it is a venture to take out humanity’s conflicts on language itself. This look, if anything, encourages us to keep thinking and researching the functions, retreats, deployments and missions of languages. - Icts and their implications in human rights formation

This work of reflection was conducted at the Universidad de los Andes in 2011 in the research line “Oral mythological tradition”.It studies Pedro Gómez Valderrama in his only novel,La otra raya del tigre (The tiger’s other strip), and Enrique Otero D’Costa in his two tales about blessed souls. In these three stories, prose mythology educates people on their work and Christian responsibilities, while it censors the habit of drinking. The works make a scolding in order to promote morality and good practices. - Qualitative research: An ongoing methodology on social facts

This review article is the result of experience on the comprehension of the social phenomenon from the point of view of qualitative research. This work seeks to explain the reflexive dynamics that characterize the process of learning, analysis, comprehension, and interpretation of social reality that is traversed by relationships between individuals. The employed method is mainly determined by the manner in which the research project is approached and by the quest for answers. Referenced sources are part of an array of authors that are read by teachers and researchers during their formation, a plane in which discussion is brought to life when the educator contemplates the possibility of considering men in their context facing the world. - The relation of the linguistic sign with the mind and cognitive processes: A conceptualization essay from a historical and cultural perspective

This paper is an essay on two fundamental principles (iconicity and motivation), that are fundamental in academic discussion on modern linguistics. The author claims that the distance between linguistic expressions may constitute an iconic index of the conceptual and psychological distance between the terms or events that said expressions denote. On the other hand, the length of an expression may also have a relationship with the degree in which the expression presents new or unknown information, and thus a reduced form may constitute an economically motivated index of familiarity.

- How to improve language and memory

The following short paper presents partial results of research on language and memory that is being developed in the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia at Bucaramanga since the second semester of 2011. Memory and language are two terms that cannot be conceived independently, without the first one we could not afford the registration of the surrounding world in our brain. Without the second one, any information trace would be a cosmic drift. Memory is a function of the brain and at the same time a phenomenon of the mind that allows the organism to encode, store, and retrieve information. Encoding, storing and reproducing information is a job that becomes viable through language and strategies that are developed with it - Crime fiction: A look of the city based on El Eskimal y la Mariposa, by Nahum Montt

The following article, which is a conference paper, was presented at the iv National Colloquium on the History of Colombian Literature, organized by the Universidad de Antioquia – Medellín in May 2011. The paper treats recent detective novels in Colombian literature; particularly, it studies the novel El Eskimal y la Mariposa, by writer Nahum Montt from Santander. In this paper we undertake a first approach to a hypothesis that states that the spaces and characters of the novel are configured in a gloomy manner. With this, we pretend to show that this novel belongs to the “noir”genre through both its contents and the way in which it configures said elements. - ¿Cuál es el síntoma de las series estadounidenses?

The following article is an approach to the life and work of Linguist Stephen Krashen. This section of “Great Biographies” is dedicated to this professor because of his contributions to the Second Language Acquisition theory for bilingual education. Also, we present this author because his work is coherent with the dossier of this publication. The essence of Krashen’s Second Language Acquisition theory states that real acquisition does not happen overnight; it is a slow process in which speaking skills emerge from listening skills through a long period of time. - Icts in teaching Spanish to children with hearing disability

This is a research paper that stems from the macro-research “Interaction between icts and bilingual teaching as a functional learning alternative” developed from the second semester of 2010 to the first semester of 2012. The paper presents different processes and methodologies that can be applied for teaching Spanish to children with hearing disability, the study was made with children from first grade at the Escuela Normal Superior de Bucaramanga, the children were chosen during the first semester of 2010. For the development of the research we designed a platform on Moodle. In said platform students can participate in different assignments through which they analyze and interact with the Spanish language. The purpose of this application is to facilitate an adequate promotion of integral development for children with hearing disability, thus giving teachers an auxiliary tool for their daily activities. - Interaction between icts and bilingual teaching

This project is based on the use of icts in education, in the development of the “primaria bilingüe” (bilingual primary education) project, currently under course in 5th and 6th grade of the Escuela Normal Superior de Bucaramanga. This is a research paper resulting from the macro-research “Interaction between ict s and bilingual teaching as a functional learning alternative”, developed from the second half of 2010 to the first half of 2012. In this project, we intend for students to learn and acquire a second language in a comprehensive and continuous context, as a result of all their curricular subjects being taught in English, all this with constant support from a teacher. Through the use of a wiki, students can give feedback on topics covered in class, they are also involved so they can share and interact. In this process we can see the progress in the students’ English level based on the parameters of the Common European Framework - The development of reading comprehension and writing skills in English learning

This is a research paper resulting from the macro-research “Interaction between ictand bilingual teaching as a functional learning alternative”, that was developed from the second semester 2010 to the first semester 2012, in the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, Bucaramanga. Noting the difficulties of children in listening and reading, we have based our approach in the development of receptive skills on second grade students (2-2) of the Escuela Normal Superior de Bucaramanga in order to create alternatives for the solution of the problems presented by the students in the diagnostic, during the second semester of 2010. - Methodological guide based in icts for the teaching of English as a foreign language

This article presents the results of the research project “Teaching English as a second language based on ict s”, developed at the Escuela Normal Superior de Bucaramanga; this research stems from the macro-project “Interaction between ict and bilingual teaching as a functional learning alternative”, it was developed from the second semester 2010 to the first semester 2012. Given that we are in a world that is globalized, books are no longer adequate as the sole teaching resource, nor is it enough to recommend the use of new technologies to the students, we must instead implement them in the classroom and guide the collaborative process. Our purpose is to broaden the teachers’ use of new Web 2.0 technologies and implement them as a teaching resource. In this way, they shall find benefits for themselves as well as students motivated in the acquisition of English as a second language. - Web 2.0 as a pedagogical strategy in the process of English language teaching-learning
