  • Public veterinary health under the appr oach of one health, the integrating element of policies and strategies for food security , safety and rural development
Veterinary public health is conceived as a discipline with an extensive and broad level of action on the human health protection and the increase of food yield through the interventions in animal health and production. Understanding that human and animal health coexist in the same ecosystem, this article aims to review veterinary public health from the "one health" approach.
  • Bioethical perspective of field sur gical practices in the education of veterinary medicine and zootechnics
This article deals with different perspectives related to the recognition of nature by human in order to continue with an overview that relates this discussion with praxis errors that still ignore the bioethical order. It highlights the need of the precepts modifications in the teaching processes in the universities where the interaction with other species of living beings exist. This makes evident the importance of establishing a permanent commitment to the all-around education of future professionals in terms of the harmonious human sustainability with other species and with the natural environment. Finally, particular points of view on how to bring bioethical discourse into the classroom are specifically highlighted. It is made in order to create awareness and modify as far as possible pedagogical strategies from a bioethical perspective. This way to have the possibility to transform the cognitive structure of students towards an attitude of respect for life in all its forms. Especially when it comes to patients in the surgical practice of Veterinary Doctors and Veterinary Zootechnical Doctors in the process of training.

The problem of illicit use of wildlife in Colombia does not concentrate only in the need for real data access or strict compliance with the regulatory framework, but it involucrate even more serious matter with social, environmental, economic and legal implications. Moreover the problem has a moral, ethical and bioethical focus for those involved and corresponds to the handling and destination of seized, rescued or voluntarily delivered wildlife specimens. The investigation sought to look for the general panorama of pressure on wild species, the normative indications established for their management and the main governmental actions. General guidelines of the established theory were used for the information gathering process. The analysis of the normative guidelines was developed from a dogmatic legal reference, but the analysis of the results was based only on the currently valid normative guidelines. For the contextualization of the identified legal framework, the information available from scientific publications or issued by environmental entities was used. Especially the information of the regions with greater impact on the study problem, such as the department of Caquetá, was investigated. The aim of the research was not to suggest euthanasia as the best alternative for the management of postconfiscated wildlife, but as the need for consideration and analysis due to the possible presence of cases of therapeutic cruelty and disthanasia. Mainly this cases are derived from the actions of government entities. It is also worth mentioning the necessary activation of alternative management mechanisms such as zoocría.
  • Characterization of the caprine pr oduction system experimental farm at the University Francisco de Paula Santander Ocaña, Colombia.
The purpose of this study is to characterize the goat production system of the experimental farm of the Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander (UFPSO) in Ocaña, in order to recognize the components of the production system, taking as a differentiating point, the fact that it is a sheepfold that provides services to research and academia. The type of applied research was qualitative of descriptive type, with non-probabilistic sampling for convenience. A survey was applied as an instrument for the collection of data to the Director of the system, the Zootechnician in charge of reproduction and the Veterinarian responsible for health. This survey includes 8 factors that cover the agricultural, livestock, economic and socio-cultural components, studying parameters such as: generalities of the production system; nutritional and food management; existing animal and genetic inventory; productive process and reproductive management; sanitary management; economic component; marketing and administrative process. The system is semi-stable, dedicated to the specialized production of milk and genetics for this purpose. Rigorous management of productive, sanitary and reproductive records was observed, showing strengths in innovation strategies in the transformation processes of dairy and meat products made from discarded males; these products are marketed at the University's point of sale and in the area's supermarkets. Likewise, processes for measuring animal welfare, studies to determine the sustainability of production and conservation of local breeds are implemented, with biotechnological processes in Santandereana goats. The UFPSO sheepfold is a reference for the development of the goat sector, providing training, advice and genetics at affordable prices, which has a positive impact on the region. On the other hand, it presents points to improve in the determination of production costs, due to the characteristics of public entity that governs it and the surcharges that this entails.
  • First record of Entamoeba coli in Amazona aestiva xanthopteryx (chaco´s speaking parrot) in Argentina
Free-living amoebas are microorganisms present in different environments such as water or soil. They are maintained in ecosystems and can cause serious diseases due to their ability to carry intracellular bacteria to their hosts that are resistant to phagocytosis. Afterwards they invade causing bacterial disease, which makes these microorganisms an important vehicle of transmission of various pathologies of interest in public health. For this investigation, the fecal samples with signs of diarrhea were collected from an Amazona aestiva xanthopteryx (speaking parrot from chaco) and were processed by direct parasitological and spontaneous sedimentation methods. Swabs from the sewage area were sent to bacteriology and then direct seeding was carried out. With the help of the analysis of the samples, the presence of Entamoeba coli was identified as an unpublished record for the species. This study contributed to the knowledge of this problem, especially with the presence of Escherichia coli in the clinical picture.
