This investigation was developed at the sabanas of the deparment of Casanare, Colombia, between june/2006 and april/2007, with the objective to classify the parasite population that affect gastrointestinal and pulmonary system. The equine faecal samples were taken of four towns of Casanare: Aguazul, Paz de Ariporo, Maní and El Yopal. Ten fresh samples were taken from each town, directly on pasture and completely radomized. The faecal samples were analyzed by MacMaster`s technique that showed gastrointestinal nematodes eggs of type Strongylido spp., Strongyloide spp., Triodonthoforus spp., Habronema spp., and Oxyuris spp.. By Coprocultives the parasite genere found were: Small strongylus (86.2%), Strongylus vulgaris (6.2%), Strongylus edentatus (3.6%), Strongylus equinus (2.8%), Strongyliodes westeri (1.1%) and Trichostrongylus axei (0.20%), and by Baermann`s technique it was not found Dyctiocaulus spp. - Editorial

This report describe 2 cases, which were submitted to the “Diego Villegas Toro” Veterinary Hospital of the Caldas University, with severe pneumonia. After physical examination and various tests, it was concluded that the most likely diagnoses included: cricopharyngeal achalasia (AC) and pharyngeal dysphagia (DF). We discuss the therapeutic alternatives and the clinical course of patients and mention the therapeutic essay realized in a patient according to literature suggestions. - Heart failure models in canines

Now days small animals are been incorporated to the society like new members of the family and one the main affections that they present is heart failure, because of the prevalence of the syndrome, dogs are also used like models for the development of these syndrome. We can define heart failure like a clinic syndrome that is caused by a cardiac illness and it can generate systolic and diastolic dysfunction that can not satisfied the metabolic tissue. This article pretends to make a review of the different models and mechanisms that generates heart failure. - Collaborative work and learning objectives in virtual environments for the teaching of hemodynamics veterinary medicine

This research was conducted with students of fourth semester of Veterinary Medicine program at La Salle University, Bogotá, Colombia, who validated four learning objects in a virtual environment (AVA) to determine whether or not they promoted collaborative work from the strategy-based in learning by problems. It began with the design of activities to put into learning objects and intentionally promote collaborative work, from a real problem of hemodynamics in animals. The methodology was qualitative and performed the pedagogical model, focusing on cognitive theory and the constructivist approach, in which the objects were at the Moodle platform that was created under this approach. Also it was performed the technologic and communicative modelling. The methodological steps for the technology was supported in the GRACE method for engineers. The results were induced by observing through the case study. As a result it was determined that one of the features that should have the learning objects to promote collaborative work, without the intervention of the teacher as a tutor, is to include some of the strategies of collaborative learning as used in this research is that learning is based in problems. Another important feature of learning objects to promote collaborative work is to have, adequate links to go through forums, chat, or other tools (not used in this research) as the blog or wiki. The forum was a collaborative work, which was scarce in the beginning, and although all were present that were autonomous in their learning, was a certain fear to seek help from peers here, but when they found a greater degree of difficulty to solve a problem, began to ask or request permission to work with others, then collaborative learning took place, as all came to not only at the level of the object (know the concepts) but at the aim level (apply the knowledge). - Aislamiento de cryptococcus neoformans var. Clinical, cytologic and serologic evidence of a natural infection with Criptococcus was identified in a domestic short-haired cat from La Mesa, Cundinamarca (Colombia); C. neoformans var. grubii was isolated in a culture of the nasal secretions of the patient. Fluconazol was used for the specific treatment; clinical recovery was observed as from the first month of treatment. - Clinical trial of tepoxalin use in cranial cruciate ligament rupture conservative treatment in dogs

The rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament (CCLR) characterizes itself for a partial or a total laceration of the cranial cruciate ligament. Patients with ligament (partial or total) acute laceration present acute lameness, with total or partial incapacity of sustentation of their weight on the affected leg. The clinic therapy with conservative drugs must be used previously to the surgical treatment. The tepoxalin, a no steroid anti-inflammatory can be indicate in the reduction of the inflammatory process and relieve of the pain, caused by acute and chronic musculoskeletal disturbances. It promotes a balanced blockade of the brake of the arachidonic acid by the lipoxygenase and cycloxigenase rote of the inflammatory cascade. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the tepoxalin efficiency in CCLR conservative treatment, though specific clinical test, radiographic exams, and cytological analysis of the articular liquid. Ten dogs with CCLR, between male and female were enclosed on this study and they received a dose of 10mg/kg of tepoxalin daily. The lameness, arc movements test in maximum extension of the leg and digit pressure, as well as, the articular liquid analysis after 28 days of treatment, allow to conclude the effectiveness of the tepoxalin in the CCLR conservative treatment. It promoted the return to the normal deambulation in all treated cases, and it can be considerate one more option of AINE on the treatment of this artropathy. - Environmental factors that affect milk somatic cell count in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)

This study was performed in order to estimate the relation between some environmental factors and somatic cell count (SCC). This relation was verified by testing the frequency of analyzed samples in classes according to the SCC as follows: very high, high, medium and low. 23,534 milk samples corresponding to 2.198 lactations of Murrah breed animals were used. The buffaloes were between 2 and 15 years old and were daughters of 187 males. The samples were taken during a period of 7 years. In general, the results showed that SCC was low, medium, high and very high for 96.34%, 2.3%, 0.96% and 0.4% for the samples, respectively. Low and medium SCC had the highest frequencies, pointing out that in buffaloes there is a tendency of lower SCC when compared to bovines. There were differences between the average SCC according to the order and season of parturition. There were also significant differences between the average SCC of some control samples (P<0.05). In relation to order of parturition there were observed differences between SCC frequencies, but as a general statement it was observed that as order of parturition was higher the rate of lower SCC decreased and the frequency of medium, high and very high SCC increased. The results indicated that the effects of farm, year and order of parturition should be considered when comparing animals. - Paratuberculosis study in a sheep flock of la sabana de bogotá by using three diagnostic techniques

The present work was carried out in a sheep farm of la Sabana de Bogotá, where the purpose of this research was to make a paratuberculosis study in that flock aiming to diagnose by three diagnostic techniques the Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis presence. It was used 250 ovine females of San Jorge Experimental Farm – ICA, where a pheces sample were taken from each animal and by Zielh Neelsen’s stain it was stablished the presence of acid fast bacilli. Then, it was made the tuberculinization process (PPD AVIAR® SAGAR B – 0653-034) to the entire population of female sheep and finally, it was carried out a serology test (ELISA Pourquier®). From the stool sample, only 10 was positive where 4 of them were questionable. In the skin test it was found that 16 animals were positive due to a reaction ≥ to 5 mm, however, 3 of them were suspicious due to meterings < to 5 mm. In the ELISA test only 2 animals were positive. In adition, it was followed up a case of an animal that resulted positive to all techniques, also to histophatology and necropsy, confirming the presence of the disease. The findings suggest the need of several tests for a successful diagnose of paratuberculosis with the purpose of set the status and distribution of the disease in the flock.
