Objective: to identify the characteristics of compulsory voting and its applicability in the democratic system of Colombia. Methodology: this qualitative and documentary research included documentary sources such as laws, decrees and research studies on popular vote, democracy, compulsory voting and the vote in Colombia. Similarly, statistics and surveys published by the congress of the Republic, by the national newspapers and by the international political centers were taken into account. Results: findings show that in Colombia compulsory voting has not been relevant, since its dissemination and implementation does not have the theoretical and legal foundations required for approval by the Congress of the Republic. This is coupled with the rising tide of distrust in the electoral system of the country. Conclusions: it is concluded that compulsory voting has advantages for Democracy and its establishment implies contraventions for those who do not fulfill their duty to vote.
