The article presents the findings of in-depth interviews carried out in the ethnographic context in Mexico City about danzón as a recreational artistic activity and its influence on the formation of social networks of older people. The main hypothesis maintains that danzón as a recreational practice is redefining the possibilities of social contact and support networks among the practicing subjects (men and women from the middle sectors of Mexico City between 55 and 75 years old). The danzón positively impacts the identity of the participants, their relationships between peers, the possibility of enjoyment, the capacity for autonomy, the sense of security and, above all, the sense of belonging; defining the importance of recreational-type physical activities and their influence on the quality of affective relationships during old age, a field little explored and open to interdisciplinary research.
