Topic and scope: this article aims to provide the reader with an overview on toxoplasmosis, a zoonosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii, which affects both intermediate and definitive hosts. We seek to understand the dynamics of the disease, putting aside certain myths on the subject. Characteristics: felines ( Felidae) are the definitive hosts, among which are the cats as the closest animal to the human species that develop the gendered form of the parasite and release the infectious oocysts in the environment; hence their presence is essential to the life cycle of T. gondii. Findings: research on cats worldwide are limited since sampling is highly complex; however, there is a wide variety of studies on their taxonomy, morphology, life cycle and molecular biology, as well as epidemiological distribution, hosts, transmission routes, sources of contamination, and risk factors associated with the infection in this and other vulnerable species. Conclusions: the knowledge of this parasite infection is of great importance, especially in cases of pregnant women and immunosuppressed individuals, who can manifest complications of the disease.
