Optometry students and optometrists face numerous and serious bioethical problems every day nevertheless, the type and frequency of these in clinical practice is unexplored. <em><strong>Objectives:</strong><em> To explore the type and frequency of bioethical problems perceived by students during their practice, and to examine how they see their ability to address them. <em><strong>Methodology:</strong><em> During a descriptive study, 55 students between their 7th and 9th semesters filled out the Bioethical Problems in Optometry Questionnaire. <em><strong>Results:</strong><em> Students report that they face numerous bioethical problems during their clinical rotation. These include disqualifying comments on the performance of students and professionals refusing to attend a patient considering that it is a difficult case examining patients without their consent students asking for help from their rotating colleagues because they feel that their clinical skills are not sufficient and the loss of pages of medical records. <em><strong>Conclusions:</strong><em> The bioethical problems reported were related to collegiality, treatment of patients, professionalism, informed consent and confidentiality, which are common situations in other health professions too. They also reported issues unique to their role as students. More than half of the respondents said that they did not feel prepared to face bioethical problems. It would be important to place greater emphasis on case management and bioethical decision making within the curriculum of the program, as well as on experiences and topics that could enrich the ethical discourse of students and could enable them to face bioethical problems of their clinical environment.

This study arose from an interest in bioethics training programs in health sciences. <em><strong>Objectives:</strong><em> Based on the analysis of courses, it aims to identify aspects that motivate teaching, as well as issues, evaluation and teaching-learning strategies (TLS), and recommendations for improving teaching and learning in this field. <em><strong>Methodology:</strong><em> Literature search and selection of articles in different databases, such as SciELO, PubMed, and EBSCO. <em><strong>Results:</strong><em> 37 articles and additional information from other documents were included. <em><strong>Conclusions:</strong><em> Courses respond to ethical issues raised by the advance of science and technology, changes in context, changes in health systems, protection of the welfare and quality of life of patients, and the need to strengthen principles and values related to professionalism and identification, reasoning and moral decision-making. The issues were in tune with these motivations. The TLSs were: case studies, use of texts, multimedia and information and communication technology (ICT), problem-based learning, casuistry, and e-learning. There was little evidence on evaluation and this was no different from traditional evaluations based on instruments. Some guidelines for the qualification of educational processes in bioethics in health sciences were proposed.

Children are subjected to a high demand for visual tasks from an early age, associated with their school activities, that can cause alterations in the oculomotor system generating symptoms that, sometimes, affect your school performance and emotional state, which leads to a closer study of binocular vision disorders such as convergence insufficiency (CI) and child behavioral disorders, They are characterized by being persistent, repetitive and inappropriate, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The objective of this review was to identify and describe the definition, prevalence, clinical signs, the symptomatology and treatment for convergence insufficiency and how it is associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder through a literature review of different databases, and in which articles were identified in which the visual function of children with ADHD diagnosis was intended to be known, the presence of symptoms associated with this disorder in patients diagnosed with insufficient convergence and even clinical trials comparing changes in The results of this study were based on the results of a study conducted by the European Commission in March 1998. The results of this review lead to the conclusion that an association between ADHD and HF in children is evident, but not a causal relationship, studies on representative samples are therefore necessary.

Research with children helps to produce knowledge for the improvement of their well-being. The vulnerability of minors, aspects concerning their participation in decision-making, as well as the asymmetry of their relationship with adults generate particular ethical issues and highlight the need for this population to receive special attention. <em><strong>Objective</strong><em> To examine ethical aspects that should be considered when designing and developing research with the participation of children. <em><strong>Materials and methods</strong><em> A search and documentary review was carried out in the EBSCO and SciELO databases, in addition to including texts and other documents on the subject. The categories and subcategories identified were used as thematic axes. Information was selected from the publication period of 1976-2017. <em><strong>Conclusion</strong><em> The design and development of ethical research requires that researchers propose relevant questions use sound theoretical assumptions and adequate methodologies know the characteristics, needs and expectations of children and comply with the core principles of research. These principles include respect for people, beneficence and justice—which is materialized in research contexts in the informed consent and assent—, guarantee of confidentiality and privacy, risk-benefit balance, equitable selection of research subjects, equitable distribution of benefits, balance of power relationships, and considerations about economic retribution to participants.

The pillars of preventive medicine are a whole nutrition and to adopt positive habits. Today it is know that nutritional factors contribute to prevent chronic illnesses and ocular pathologies suc as DMRE and cataracts. This article compiles studies related to nutritional factors and macular degeneration due to age, to offer recommendations that may contribute to the life style of our patients. DMRE pathogenesis includes nutritional and environmental factors among others. Researches have focused to study the role of micronutrients in the DMRE development. Recently attention has been focused in researching carotenoides (luteina and Zeaxantina) in human retina and it is stated that they have a protective function in retinal tissues. It is also suggested that the of these in blood is potentially associated with visual function. Thus, the consumption of luteina and Zeaxantina is associated with a low risk of DMRE although it is not completely proved. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) is the only prospective clinical essay that has proved the benefits of nutrients in the risk reduction of suffering from DMRE. Although it is desirable the nutrient consumption in patients, smokers shouldrefrain from consumption supplements with beta carotenes because they increase lung cancer risk. Through evidence we can recommend patients with DMRE risk to have a balanced diet, low in fat and rich in fruits and green leaves vegetables, as well as the consumption of vitamin supplements according to the needs, wear UV protection glasses and a cap.

Reference value is a term used in the context of health sciences to denote a quantity used as point of reference to interpret the results of tests, specially laboratory test. The reference values are essentially of two types: “associated with the health” and “based on decision”. The reference values are the most used tool in the diagnostic work. Specifically in optometry most of studies in this area are related to the terms: reference Intervals, normative data, normal values and reference values. The propose of this article is to present some of the studies on reference values of contrast sensitivity and visual acuity, based in the search of articles from 1980 to 2009. The reviewed studies results are summarized. Conclusions: in health sciences, the values derived from the test are compared with a normal value reason for which it is necessary to have normal values. Some studies seem to have used significant samples and diverse age groups, the great majority differs in the methodology and interpretation of the results. There does not exist an unified criterion of normal values in. The values of reference suggested must be confirmed in studies with major samples, more rigorous methodologies and a clinical wide spectrum taking accountin gender, age and etnia. Despite of the studies fails these constitute a starting point to evaluate the clinical results of some test.

Measurement of refractive errors from an early age makes it possible to decide about whether ornot to prescribe optical correction, taking development, refractive error and age into account.Correction criteria are based on reference values, and in Colombia we use the parameters establishedby European and American schools resulting from population studies, due to the lack ofresearch on normal values. This paper presents partial results of a research carried out by a numberof professors from the Optometry program at La Salle University. <em><strong>Objective</strong><em> To determine refractiveerror reference values in children from three to seven years of age from the Chapinero Localityin Bogota. <em><strong>Methodology</strong><em> Reports show results for fifty children, based on inclusion criteria. Retinoscopywas performed under cycloplegia. The SPSS program was used for statistical analysis.<em><strong>Results</strong><em> Average refractive error in the group of three-years-olds was 0.63 D; 0.50 D in the groupof four and six-years-olds; and 0.25 D in the groups of five and seven-years-olds. <em><strong>Conclusions</strong><em> Ageis a very important demographic factor associated to refractive condition in children. Hyperopiais the most prevalent refractive condition in the analyzed sample.

The visual acuity measurement in children is an important Challenger for the optometrist, given de complexity of the task and to require knowledge and patience. According to the stimulus, the visual acuity can be divided in three types: detection, resolution and recognition. The values of these can be different and they are altered in different proportion in the presence of visual problems. The present article makes an overhaul of the test of the visual acuity for children which years have generated great number of investigations in the past years: Teller, Cardiff, Lea, HOTV and logMAR charts that could be used in the school age group. Materials and <em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> A documentary review of 50 references from different sources: indexed publications (47) in Pubmed http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, web sites (1) and specialized books (2). Conclusions: The tests reviewed are not necessarily used commonly used our clinical daily practice, nevertheless the investigative activity concerning these has reached in the construction of diagnostic protocols. The reference for a better clinical practice must be the optometry based on the evidence, since this one allows to the professionals to have new facts that contribute to the election of the best alternative to determine the visual acuity in the children. The optometrist a must follow rigorously the protocols of evaluation of the visual acuity to give to measurements major reliability and to analyze the results obtained inside the context of the history. The methods for the evaluation of the visual acuity can be adapted in agreement with the skills, knowledge and experience of the child being examinated. There is evident the importance of realizing studies on the application of these test in order to evaluate their reliability and utility in our patients.
