Medical management and early treatment is the key to these patient having the best quality of life. The most common complications are within the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system (orthostatic hypotension, autonomic disrreflexia, and deep vein thrombosis), and the musculoskeletal system (spasticity, contractures, musculoskeletal pain, neurogenic heterotopic ossification, and osteoporosis); Other complications include bladder dysfunction, pressure sores, neuropathic pain, and sexual dysfunction. The implications of these complications that are involved in so many areas of the human body can be addressed by the physical therapist, making it ideal for the management of these patients.
