This article analyzes the play Arran del Mar Caribe (1944), of Ramón de Vinyes, well-known for being the “Catalan wise” of One Hundred Years of Solitude, of Gabriel García Márquez. Set in La Guajira and with migrated Catalans as the principal characters of the drama, it shows us the cultural confrontation and the strangeness of the exiled, who opposes his national affection to the ambiguous experience of the mixed races in the Caribbean. The geographic, literary and historic contexts, both the Colombian and international –including the Second World War, and the nazi presence in the Atlantic coast– allow to the authors to go into the multiple imbrications of the drama in depth, whose tragic elements and “pre-Macondian” context stress the Vinyes’ grasp about Colombian literature and culture.

Resumen. El Carnaval de Barranquilla, fi esta popular del Caribe colombiano, se ha convertido en veta inagotable para la inspiración de artistas, cineastas, escritores y músicos, al igual que tema de estudio para antropólogos, historiadores, periodistas y sociólogos. La investigación revisa y recopila los documentales realizados que tienen por tema las fi estas populares, tratando de reconstruir una historia del patrimonio audiovisual sobre las carnestolendas. Parte de textos y publicaciones de prensa, hace un recorrido por algunos de los documentales realizados —proponiendo, por lo que se sabe hasta ahora, que la producción fílmica sobre los carnavales de Barranquilla comenzó en 1914 con el primer documental producido en Colombia— y continúa su inventario crítico hasta llegar al trabajo presentado ante la UNESCO para ilustrar su candidatura como “Obra maestra del patrimonio oral e inmaterial de la humanidad”.

El seguimiento de las noticias de prensa sobre el Carnaval de Barranquilla, muestra un alto porcentaje de artículos, que desde su proclamación por la UNESCO como Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad, hasta la fecha, parecen inclinarse a demostrar o ventilar públicamente los intereses y escándalos económicos que se han generado en el seno de las organizaciones que actualmente lo administran. Este enfoque hace un breve recorrido por 100 años de su historia, desde las primeras investigaciones antropológicas de sus danzas y disfraces, hasta la crítica económica que ha generado su nombramiento e inclusión en el circuito mundial de la industria cultural. /The follow-up of the news press about the Barranquilla Carnival shows a high percentage of articles that, since its proclamation as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO up to this moment, seems to probe or make public the interests and economical scandals that have been generated in the epicenter of the organizations that now run it. This approach makes a brief tour through its 100 years of history, from the first anthropological research of its dances and costumes, to the economical critique that has generated the acknowledgement of one of the biggest carnivals in the Caribbean and its inclusion in the world circuit of cultural industry.
