The quality of papaya fruits during its growth and commercialization is affected by diseases as Antracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) and papaya ringspot potyvirus (PRSV). We identified and analyzed harvest and posharvest practices of papaya (Carica papaya cv. Maradol) in the Colombian Department of Huila in order to establish some causes of losses through the productive chain. We carried out an exploratory investigation to characterize some links of the productive chain of papaya: producers, transporters, dealers and consumers. People in this survey prefer to consume papaya Maradol, although 35% of the consumers do not distinguish the papaya varieties. Quality concept in not applied in a cross-sectional way so inappropriate practices are applied. Because of this, the implementation of both harvest and postharvest good practices is fundamental in order to preserve the quality of the fruit, which allows a reduction in the postharvest losses and brings the consumer a better product.
